The Location Area Code/Tracking Area Code, abbreviated as LAC/TAC, is an identifier of the location area within an MNO’s network. This part of the code can be represented using hexadecimal values with a length of two octets.

The served area of a cellular radio network is usually divided into location areas. Location areas are comprised of one or several radio cells. Each location area is given an unique number within the network, the Location Area Code (LAC). This code is used as a unique reference for the location of a mobile subscriber. This code is necessary to address the subscriber in the case of an incoming call.
