Small-scale and coastal fisheries

This study forms an understanding of the representation of women working in FLAG areas and assesses the level and types of support FLAGs provide to these women. The findings add to the wider understanding of the number and roles of women working in the fisheries and aquaculture industry and analyses how FLAG support to women varies and is implemented. FLAG support to women is defined as (1) a project with a female project promotor, when the project is privately invested and/or (2) other FLAG activities where the primary objective is the support of the women in the FLAG area.

FLAG Mangalia Litoral is in the south-east of Romania. The territory borders Bulgaria to the south and the Black Sea to the east and is characterised by coastal cliffs, coastlines and low floodplains.

The Dobrogea South FLAG is situated in the south-eastern part of Romania, in the historical Dobrogea province. The area is bordered to the south by Bulgaria and to the east by the Black Sea.

A new FLAG supports the fusion of gastronomy, “eating local” and fisheries heritage by supporting an atypical restaurant in the port of Gandía.

The net making profession has always been one of the least recognised professions within the fishing sector so several Galician net makers´ associations have brought it into the spotlight by combining dissemination workshops with a new range of products based on their unique know-how.

The Lake Vãttern Co-management Group, supported by the FLAG, is helping local stakeholders to reach a consensus on the sustainable management of fish resources of the second largest lake in Sweden.

A local fisherman takes the initiative to explore how solar lighting might improve safety and make working hours more flexible at the remote pier where he lands his fish.

The Tri Mora FLAG is situated in the central part of Adriatic coast in Zadar County, under the Velebit mountain range and stretching over the Velebit channel.

--ARCHIVED as of 31 January 2020-- The FLAG area covers the North Thames from Thurrock to Shoeburyness in Essex and is based around the port at Leigh-on-Sea. The port is the first when travelling up the Thames from London and has significant cultural importance in the area, attracting tourists from all over South East England. The major fisheries industry in Leigh-on-Sea is the cockle fishery which dominates much of the port. However, there are also several trawlers targeting mixed fisheries in the Greater Thames and Southern North Sea areas

A volunteer association of professional and recreational fishermen obtains support to combat illegal fishing and better monitor local fish stocks.
