Fisheries resources

Ibiza and Formentera, known as the Pitiusas Islands, are located at the western edge the Balearic archipelago, in the Mediterranean Sea. The economy of Ibiza and Formentera is characterised by a notable tourism sector.

Poniente Almeriense is situated in the southwest of the Almería province and comprises a 35km coastline. It is boarded to the north by the Sierra de Gádor and the Alborán Sea to the south. West of the FLAG area is the municipality of Albuñol (Granada) and to the east is the Gulf of Almería. From a social perspective, there is a strong unity between the FLAG area’s four municipalities.

The Almería Coast FLAG is situated in the eastern part of the Almería province with an area spanning approximately 1 500km2. The region has longstanding fishing tradition but in recent years, the industry has been in decline.

The FLAG area consists of four municipalities (Catarroja, Silla, Gandía and El Palmar) which belong to the coastal regions of Ciudad de Valencia, La Safor and l’Horta Sud.

The Costa Brava FLAG area consists of eleven municipalities which are LLançà, El Port de la Selva, Cadaqués, Roses, L’Escala, Torroella de Montgrí, Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Tossa del Mar, Lloret del Mar, and Blanes. The territory is situated in the northeast of Spain and bordered by the French Vermilion Coast to the north and by the Maresme Coast to the south.

The autonomous community of the Basque Country, situated at the easternmost end of the Cantabrian coast area, has 246km coastline, representing 5% of the Spanish coast.

The Sidra FLAG, located in the mid-eastern part of Asturias, consists of five municipalities: Colunga, Bimenes, Cabranes, Nava and Villaviciosa. The area spans 570km2 which is approximately 5% of the Asturian region.

The FLAG area stretches from the eastern part of Marseille to Port Grimaud in Saint Tropez. The area covers both densely populated urban centres as well as a number of exceptional natural spaces, including two National Parks, which may explain the area’s strong tourist attraction (second tourist region of France).

The FLAG covers a large rural area characterized by the garrigue, a scrubland eco-region characteristic of the Mediterranean, and a coastal strip of 20 km known as the Camargue, shaped by the Rhone river delta.

Fisheries activities have been long rooted in the FLAG area and, present in both its coastal waters and lagoons, are still closely associated with the local heritage. Indeed, it is the second French Mediterranean production area, hosting both fishing activities and shellfish farming.
