Latvian FLAGs teamed up in a cooperation project to finance a study aimed at assessing the seaweed production potential from Latvian waters along with options for a management plan that would ensure a sustainable exploitation of this resource.

Oyster farms on the Leucate lagoon are regularly affected by toxic phytoplankton, leading to economic losses, especially during the high season around Christmas. In search of a solution, shellfish farmers teamed up with a biotech start-up to test a new, quick and easy way to detect toxic marine microalgae and anticipate its proliferation.

The FLAG is a geographically homogeneous area located in the south of Teleorman county on the left bank of the Danube River. The main fishing area is located along the 85km long coastline.

The FLAG area is located in the Braila Plainm in the South-east of the country, in the basins of the Danube, Calmăţui and Siret rivers. The natural environment, through its hydrographic network, relief, vegetation and fauna, fosters the development of the fisheries sector and tourism.

The FLAG area covers 20 municipalities and is of high natural value. Scenic landscapes with forests, hills and lakes attract a lot of tourism to the area, 60% of which is in the summer. Over 70% of the workforce is employed in agriculture (including fish farming).

This Mediterranean, coastal area’s eco-system blends marine and brackish water environments, with a series of lakes connected to the sea such as the Thau lagoon. This has brought together many different economic actors relying on rural, maritime and terrestrial activities (large and small-scale fishing, shellfish farming, sailing, tourism, hydrotherapy, wine growing, etc.).

Fisheries activities have been long rooted in the FLAG area and, present in both its coastal waters and lagoons, are still closely associated with the local heritage. Indeed, it is the second French Mediterranean production area, hosting both fishing activities and shellfish farming.

The Morlaix FLAG comprises three communities, each with several municipalities. The capital city is Morlaix which has over 15 000 inhabitants. Agricultural is the area’s predominant industry and is made up of numerous small to medium size businesses. Fishing, a secondary sector in the area, mainly involves inshore fishing activities (75% of all local vessels)

The FLAG area is situated in the southeast of Scania and consists, mainly, of rural farmland and coastal areas with some productive woodlands in the north.

The area stretches over a cluster of some 30,000 sparsely populated islands and a small portion of the mainland’s countryside. It forms part of the commuter belt of Sweden’s capital city with the resulting high property prices, frequent ferry crossings and other commuter traffic that this can bring.
