The FLAG area plays host to many important fisheries activities (including more than 60% of Greek mussel production). The main advantage the area has is its proximity to the large market of that the city of Thessaloniki offers. In general, however, fisheries here remain mostly small-scale.

The FLAG area stretches between two gulfs on the Macedonian coast. Its main advantage is its proximity to the big market town of Thessaloniki. The type of fisheries found here ranges from small to medium scale. The area has one fishery harbour with a fish auction, three fishery shelters, and significant processing infrastructure.

The FLAG area is typical of Northern Brittany, combining a succession of rocky coastline, bays, river estuaries and marshes, as well as coastal towns strongly connected to a dynamic maritime environment. A great variety of ecosystems and scenery compose this area which is greatly influenced by the strong tides and harshness of the sea.

The Santa Pola FLAG is located in the South East of the Iberian Peninsula and covers the municipalities of Santa Pola and Guardamar. The main economic activities in both localities are fishing, aquaculture and tourism; salt production in salt lakes is also quite relevant.

The FLAG North-West area is found along the coasts of counties Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim and comprises the 69 local electoral areas extending 10km from the coastline. Fishing and tourism are prominent within the coastal towns. There are 219 licenced registered fishing vessels in the area and 60% of these are day boats under eight metres in length.

The FLAG area was selected based on the presence of significant fishing ports accommodating the fishing fleets operating in the maritime departments of Livorno and Portoferraio, which make use of the same fishing area and fish resources. In this area, the fishermen share markets, marketing methods and processing methods.

The FLAG is located in the middle of the north western coastline of Spain facing the Atlantic Ocean. The coastal territory of the Ria Arousa FLAG is a horseshoe-shaped area around the wide mouth of the tidal river of the same name and includes a number of islands.
