The FLAG area is characterised by its natural assets, cultural heritage, accessibility and the events and activities it offers. It is an important tourist destination visited by almost 700.000 tourists a year.

Tenerife is very much geared around tourism but there are many activities that utilise the island’s coast and marine space. Employment levels are good in the coastal area and fishing and aquaculture account for 3.4% of the island’s total employment and around 2% of its GDP

    El Hierro is the smallest and most westerly island of the Canary archipelago. The FLAG area consists of the municipalities of La Frontera, El Pinar and Valverde, covers an area of approximately 270km2, and has a population of 10 000.

    The Cádiz Estrecho FLAG area spans approximately 710km2, has a population of 70 000, and comprises natural marshland and the estuaries of the Sancti Petri channel. The area’s main fisheries activities are on the coastal stretch between the Bays of Cádiz and Algeciras, which are served by the fishing ports of Algeciras and Sancti Petri, which is situated in Chiclana.

    The region of Huelva comprises the five coastal municipalities of Ayamonte, Isla Cristina, Lepe, Cartaya and Punta Umbría. Situated on the Atlantic coast the area has an attractive coastline, low levels of urbanisation and extensive marshlands, dunes and pine forests, many of which are protected.

    The Almería Coast FLAG is situated in the eastern part of the Almería province with an area spanning approximately 1 500km2. The region has longstanding fishing tradition but in recent years, the industry has been in decline.

    The La Plana FLAG area covers the provinces of the three coastal regions of Baix Maestrat, Plana Alta and Plana Baixa. Fisheries and aquaculture only account for 5% of employment. Over a five-year period, fishing activity has reduced, and the number of active fishing vessels has decreased by more than 10%.

    The Ebro FLAG operates on the Mediterranean coast, in the south of Catalonia. It borders with Aragon to the West and the region of Valencia to the south. The municipalities covered are located along the final stretch of the Ebro river, in the unique setting of the Ebro Delta. The most important port in the area is Sant Carlos de la Ràpita.

    Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea. The Menorca FLAG consists of eight municipalities which are Mahón, Ciutadella, Alayor, Es Mercadal, Ferreries, Es Castell, San Luis and Es Migjorn Gran. Tourism stands out as the main sector in the area accounting for 80% of the islands economic activity. Other industries include jewellery and traditional footwear.
