Cultural heritage

The fisheries area “Nordfriesland Nord” is located on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, just under 20 km from the Danish border. It is a rural region with a strong tourism sector. In the immediate vicinity of the FLAG lie the North Frisian Islands of Sylt, Föhr and Amrum and the numerous Hallig islands (tidal islands). The North Sea in this area is part of the German Wadden Sea National Park of Schleswig-Holstein which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The FLAG is situated next to the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel in the north of Germany and borders the Baltic sea to the west of this city. As a brack water sea, the Baltic offers only a relatively small number of fish species.

The South FLAG area covers the coast of County Cork including seven West Cork Islands, from the Kerry–Cork boundary West of Lauragh, in Kerry to the river at Youghal. The fleet in the area is distributed across many small harbours and piers all along the coast.

The area has an excellent climate, is rich in natural resources and landscapes, and has a rare flora and fauna. The fisheries sector in the area is considered particularly important because it creates jobs and offers healthy products to the people.

Donegal is a large county with a lengthy coastline featuring a number of long inlets and bays. The region is sparsely populated and outside of Letterkenny, its only large urban centre, there is a high dependence on small-scale agriculture and fisheries enterprises.

The Danube Delta FLAG area comprises 25 administrative units and covers two contrasting geographical zones: the wetland of the Danube delta and the continental zone. The most valuable opportunities in the FLAG area include its significant tourist potential due to its traditional gastronomy and an impressive variety of beautiful natural and cultural landscapes.

The area includes the coast of the Ilia prefecture and the Pinios Lake and is located along the western half of the Peloponnese peninsula. The fisheries activities found here are mostly small-scale.

The FLAG area consists of a combination of mountainous and coastal landscapes. It possesses Greece’s largest lagoon (the Messolonghi lagoon). Most of the fishing activity is small-scale and traditional and takes place in the Messolonghi lagoon.

The FLAG area lies in Eastern Macedonia, near the Turkish border. It can be characterised economically by the development of tourism, especially on the island of Samothraki.

The area of the FLAG is located in Małopolska: relatively close to big cities such as Bielsko-Biała, Katowice and Kraków. It has a 700 year tradition of carp production in ponds.
