Geologically, the FLAG area falls in Campi Flegrei caldera, a volcanic area northwest of Naples, where both active and extinct craters exist. This area is also part of a regional park. Fish farms are present along the coast line.

The FLAG's territory is characterised by diverse coastal areas and inland hills. Many areas in the region are protected and are important environmentally.

The FLAG covers an area of 162 km 2, and includes 20 municipalities in the provinces of Naples and Salerno (from Castellammare di Stabia to Vietri sul Mare). The fisheries sector here is facing severe challenges in terms of diminishing fish resources and falling competitiveness.

The establishment of the Coast to Coast FLAG is the first implementation of fisheries CLLD in the Basilicata region. The FLAG area includes 19 municipalities within the provinces of Matera and Potenza and covers approximately 61 km of the regional coastlines of the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Seas, mostly included in protected areas or areas of community interest.

The Gorenjska region FLAG is in north-western Slovenia, on the border with Austria in the north and Italy in the west. The FLAG area is characterised by its natural assets, cultural heritage, accessibility and the events and activities it offers. It is an important tourist destination visited by almost 700.000 tourists a year.

The coastal area of Slovenia includes the coastal part of four municipalities: Ankaran, Izola, Koper, Piran, which border the Gulf of Trieste in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea. The Slovenian coastline measures only 46.6 km and the total value of the catch here represents only 0.01% of national GDP. However, the fishing sector is very important for the area’s economy and the preservation of workplaces, culture, traditions and local identity.

La Palma is one of the Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Sea. The FLAG consists of 14 municipalities, covers an area of approximately 710km2, and has a population of roughly 80 000 inhabitants.

The FLAG covers the municipalities of Hermigua, Vallehermoso, Valle Gran Rey, San Sebastián, Agulo, and Alajeró, covers an area of approximately 370km2 and has a population of 21 000.

El Hierro is the smallest and most westerly island of the Canary archipelago. The FLAG area consists of the municipalities of La Frontera, El Pinar and Valverde, covers an area of approximately 270km2, and has a population of 10 000.

The Cádiz Estrecho FLAG area spans approximately 710km2, has a population of 70 000, and comprises natural marshland and the estuaries of the Sancti Petri channel. The area’s main fisheries activities are on the coastal stretch between the Bays of Cádiz and Algeciras, which are served by the fishing ports of Algeciras and Sancti Petri, which is situated in Chiclana.
