A cooperation project promoting fishing heritage, strengthening local traditions and increasing the consumption of forgotten freshwater fish species.

The operation of Hästholmen harbour involves the cooperation of several local actors. Through a series of FLAG projects, the port has been improved and developed in accordance with the local community’s needs and opportunities.

Local fisheries communities from France, Italy and Tunisia will be sharing ideas on sustainable economic diversification, thanks to a new cooperation project run by the Etruscan Coast FLAG in Tuscany (IT).

“Salina Greens” is a Portuguese business dedicated to the organic production and processing of Salicornia, a native plant species growing on salt marshes. This production system helps preserve areas of high environmental value, while supporting the local economy.

In Abruzzo, southern Italy, Solidarity Purchasing Groups have teamed up with fishermen to start including fish in their local food baskets.

In Dalmatia, fishermen and restaurants received support from Galeb FLAG to create the ‘Fishermen recommend’ scheme and quality label, endorsing local fish products.

--ARCHIVED as of 31 January 2020-- Pembrokeshire has a long tradition of fishing, both sea and freshwater. Tenby was the prime fishing port of the area for many centuries. More recently Milford Haven has developed and taken more of a predominant role in the area’s fishing industry; this was also due in large to Tenby becoming more of a holiday resort.

A series of festivals connects fishermen and aquaculture producers with the public, raising awareness of local fish, traditions and the marine habitat.

The North of Tyne FLAG has linked up with a local food NGO to deliver a programme aimed at inspiring young trainee chefs to use more seafood. The initiative is focused on raising the awareness and profile of local and lesser-known fisheries products, while also tackling youth unemployment.
