The FLAG area is situated in Puglia (Italy’s ‘boot heel’) and is known for white painted towns, centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometres of Mediterranean coastline, the longest in the country.

The FLAG territory comprises a diverse coastline and sandy dunes and is characterised by several delicate ecosystems. The region is a major tourist destination due to its rich archaeological history.

Tourism is one of the main economic activities in the area including spa and beach tourism, underwater archaeology and fisheries-related tourism (itti-tourism and pesca-tourism). The fishing fleet consists of 306 small-scale fishing boats, of which many are below 12m in length.

The West Central Sardinia FLAG area has a varied landscape of limestone cliffs and lowland sandy coasts which feature many wet habitats and lagoons.

The area is characterised by a strong coastal urbanisation receiving 50% of the tourists that visit the Ligurian coast. Agriculture and industry are also well developed.

The FLAG area is situated in the southeast of Sicily and encompasses the provinces of Siracusa and Ragusa. The region has a strong agriculture and tourism sectors and a historical seafaring culture.

The FLAG area stretches along the coastal strip overlooking the Gulf of Naples, and features strong views of the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida throughout. Close to Naples, there is a significant amount of interaction between urban and coastal areas.

Geologically, the FLAG area falls in Campi Flegrei caldera, a volcanic area northwest of Naples, where both active and extinct craters exist. This area is also part of a regional park. Fish farms are present along the coast line.

The FLAG area lies within the northern part of the province of Viterbo or ‘Tuscia’ and comprises Lake Bolsena. The lake is currently surrounded by numerous tourist establishments which, in large, cater for camping and agrotourism.

The Blue Coast FLAG area’s main features are the wide hill zone, interrupted by a big river valley, and several densely populated coastal towns. The sandy shore has a Mediterranean climate and scrub.
