Good Practice

EU FLAG projects as of February 2020With the second generation of FLAGs now up and running, there is a growing number of project examples from the past and the present which can inspire other actions aimed at developing fisheries and aquaculture areas around Europe, be it through economic, environmental or social support and investment.
The project descriptions and short stories below give an insight into some of the local projects funded by the FLAGs, while the methods provide helpful examples of effective programme management, ranging from community outreach to FLAG self-assessment.

    A FLAG supported project brings together a network of 17 local businesses in order to consolidate Bornholm as one of Denmark’s two “energy islands”, focused on the production and transformation of wind energy.

    The oyster farmers of south Brittany installed a high-frequency multi-sensing buoy to support the understanding of spat settlement of the flat oyster, a key resource in the area.

    In Poland, the North Kaszuby FLAG supported the setting up of an experimental wind turbine in a local engineering company, helping to establish a new local energy supply, to promote economic diversification, and to create a new educational offer.

    Wizyta studyjna w LGR na wyspie Fionii (Fyn FLAG) w Danii zainspirowała przewodniczącego stowarzyszenia rybaków do zaadaptowania jednego z duńskich projektów do potrzeb swojego regionu. Projekt ma na celu ożywienie turystyki i poprawę lokalnej wiedzy na temat dziedzictwa rybołówstwa.

    Small-scale coastal fishers and fish farmers have been actively involved in the design of a coastal management plan for the Emilia-Romagna coastline. This stock management plan focused on three local high value species identified by the sector at regional level.

    The FISHEKO Operation, covering the whole coastline of Slovenia, is a project giving local fishers communication training and hiring them to carry out an awareness-raising campaign against single-use plastics in marine activities.

    Gmina Nessebar zorganizowała pierwszą edycję „Jesiennych Pasaży” w 2020 roku. Podczas tego festiwalu społeczność lokalna i turyści korzystali z szerokiego wachlarza wydarzeń promujących produkty rybne z Morza Czarnego. Na festiwalu promowany był także zawód rybaka oraz ochrona dziedzictwa morskiego.

    With support from the FLAG, local fishers are helping enforce protection measures and halt poaching in the region’s oldest fisheries marine reserve, Cabo de Palos. Its improved protection has favoured an increase of endemic species.
