Good Practice

EU FLAG projects as of February 2020With the second generation of FLAGs now up and running, there is a growing number of project examples from the past and the present which can inspire other actions aimed at developing fisheries and aquaculture areas around Europe, be it through economic, environmental or social support and investment.
The project descriptions and short stories below give an insight into some of the local projects funded by the FLAGs, while the methods provide helpful examples of effective programme management, ranging from community outreach to FLAG self-assessment.

    The Mondego Mar FLAG financed a project to bring some unused saltpans back into use to produce an aquaculture product which is highly coveted by restaurateurs: the sea urchin, also known as ‘Portuguese caviar’.

    Two FLAGs in Poland have joined efforts to implement a project promoting the fishing potential of two different regions. By focusing on their areas of greatest expertise, the FLAGs made a greater impact in their respective localities.

    Σκοπός του εν λόγω έργου συνεργασίας ήταν να εφαρμοστεί στην αλιεία μια τεχνολογία που βασίζεται στην αρχή του «blockchain». Χρησιμοποιώντας το αξιόπιστο αυτό σύστημα από κοινού καταγραφής, οι τρεις ομάδες FLAG εφάρμοσαν ένα σύστημα ιχνηλασιμότητας, το οποίο παρέχει πλήρεις και ακριβείς πληροφορίες σε καταναλωτές προϊόντων αλιείας μικρής κλίμακας.

    A Finnish FLAG supported a research project to create a business model based on indoor aquaponic farming. This innovative concept reduces water use by 85% and produces both fish and vegetables with near zero-waste discharge.

    To improve eel production in Lake Bolmen, the Halland FLAG has supported an initiative aimed at investigating why eel stocks are lower than expected compared to other similar sized lakes in Sweden. As eel are of high value to local fishers and tourism in the area, the project aims to identify and improve the cause of reduced eel stocks in the lake.

    Η επαγγελματική ένωση αλιέων με πετονιά της περιοχής της Βρετάνης έχει πραγματοποιήσει μια ενημερωτική εκστρατεία για την προώθηση της αλιείας με πετονιά. Δύο ΟΤΔΑ συνεργάστηκαν για να υποστηρίξουν αυτήν την εκστρατεία, που αναδεικνύει την περιβαλλοντική βιωσιμότητα και ποιότητα που συνδέονται με αυτόν τον τρόπο αλιείας.

Ωστόσο, παράγονται επίσης μύδια μικρού μεγέθους ως υποπροϊόντα που συνήθως πετιούνται. Αυτό το έργο επικεντρώνεται στην αξιοποίηση των δυνατοτήτων τους με την παραγωγή μεθανίου για την παραγωγή ενέργειας.

    The Lapland FLAG has financed a fisheries recruitment and training project to rejuvenate the ageing fisheries sector in the area around the Lokka and Porttipahta reservoirs. As a result, 14 young fishers of both genders started to operate.

    A FLAG supported project brings together a network of 17 local businesses in order to consolidate Bornholm as one of Denmark’s two “energy islands”, focused on the production and transformation of wind energy.
