Agersø shipyard restoration: breathing new life into a decaying building

ID:
Agersø shipyard restorated
Residents of a Danish island formed the Association of Agersø Great Belt-Shipyard to buy and renovate an old building used as a shipyard. This initiative aims to boost local business and increase the harbourfront’s attractiveness.
After spending three years securing financing for the project, renovation of the building has gone faster than expected thanks to the help of many volunteers.
Lars Frederiksen, representative of the project, owner and chairman of the Association of Agersø Great Belt-Shipyard

The old shipyard on the small island of Agersø was built in the 1930s. Unfortunately, it had been crumbling away since its owner died in 2015. The Association of Agersø Great Belt-Shipyard mobilised a team of local volunteers, as well as professional contractors, to help with the renovation. The work consisted of cleaning up the shipyard, removing the building’s windows and walls, changing the felt roofing and gutters, digging up the floor and laying new flooring.

This signature building has now been revitalised and adds to local efforts in boosting Agersø’s attractiveness to tourists – alongside the local inn, smokehouse and tractor trips, which were already on offer. The refurbished shipyard is also being leased to a local boat building and renovation company, thus helping maintain local jobs.
