FLAG builds bridges between local fishermen and municipality to regenerate port of Puise

Läänemaa FLAG has supported the reconstruction and equipment of the Estonian fishing port of Puise in a project that boosts both fishing and tourism in the coastal area. The development of a multifunctional harbour involved renovating the marine infrastructure and port facilities. A new pier, floating quays and defence nets were also built.

The Fisheries Local Action Group worked in an advisory role and as an intermediary between fishermen and local authorities to help transform Läänemaa county’s biggest fishing port. For the local municipality, the FLAG highlighted the opportunities and the terms for EU support. At the same time, the FLAG mobilised fishermen to contribute their time and energy to developing the Puise port concept.

Professional fishing at Puise had become increasingly complicated due to inadequate and severely ageing port facilities. The regeneration began in 2011 when the 14 residing fishermen got together with the local municipality to restore and equip the harbour infrastructure. Local fishermen were also involved in planning various purchases. Today, about 25 professional fishermen depend on this port. With the project nearly finished, the number of fishermen and the profitability of fishing have already increased. There is a new fishermen's house and a fish cold room, as well as fish weighing equipment and storage boxes. A brand-new truck and lifting crane were purchased for the transportation of cargo, fish boxes and fishing traps.

Fishermen are not the only ones to benefit from the redevelopment at Puise. Near the port, three local companies provide tourism services and maritime activities. Puise has become an important gathering point for the local community and hosts various fishery / maritime events every year.
