Area

The area of South Western Sardinia is characterised by a jagged coastline and long sandy shores; the area has many natural protected areas, such as the Carloforte and Sant’Antioco Isles. Inland the area has a strong cultural identity and heritage characterised by a longstanding mining industry

The local economy is based mainly on the extraction of many minerals in the territory of Iglesias and for the extraction of coal in the Sulcis area. The area’s entrepreneurial landscape is based on tourism, agriculture and small-scale fishing. There are also many companies linked to trade and the construction industry.

The area’s main challenges include the relatively small size of its fishing enterprises and their market competitiveness. The environmental impact of the areas extraction industry is also an ongoing challenge for the territory.
