The West Central Sardinia FLAG area has a varied landscape of limestone cliffs and lowland sandy coasts which feature many wet habitats and lagoons.

Specialised agriculture and cattle breeding are the most predominant inland activities in the West-Central Sardinia area. However, there are numerous small-scale fishing enterprises in the FLAG area, with fisheries activities being centred around lagoon fishing and fish processing; the most famous local product being the mullet bottarga.

A significant challenge for the FLAG area is the limited network capacities of local fishermen and stakeholders, who are not used to taking part in participatory processes. Other challenges include the transference of knowledge between generations, equal opportunities, and a low valorisation of the local cultural assets and traditions.

The FLAG strategy aims to increase fisheries income by supporting local entrepreneurship, to support generational change and inclusion of women in fisheries, to foster innovation and preservation of the lagoon, marine and natural environment.

Project examples

Project examples and ideas include:

Converting marketplaces into multifunctional areas integrating different economic circuits.
To improve in port landing facilities, hygiene and environmental quality - making them accessible to the tourism developments of sea villages and lake fishing sites.
To organise workshops and street art events focusing on the sea to promote and enhance artists, academics, university departments and both national and international sponsors.
To support the development of a pesca-tourism network linking local hotels and other services enterprises to the fisheries sector.

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG is interested in the following cooperation initiatives:

A regional cooperation project among FLAGs and LAGs in Sardinia about tourism activities, such as pesca-tourism, fishing villages and itineraries, promotion of local products (food and wine), and environmentally conscious restaurants who used ethically sourced and local products.
Transnational projects concerning the O.P. Maritime - involving the Italian and French coasts and focused on the sustainability of fishing ports and tourism.
Participation in the ENI CBC Med 2014-2020 project aiming to (1) promote the cultural, historical and architectonic attributes of the area’s fishing sites and (2) develop the and promote the role of women in fisheries.

The FLAG shares its legal structure, territory and certain members of the board with the LAG Sinis. The FLAG shares the southern part of the territory, municipalities of Arbus and Guspini, with the LAG Linas Campidano. The most frequent issues of collaborating programs are:
