Code:

Area

The FLAG’s coastal territory is of high environmental value. It is comprised of numerous villages, small towns and medium-size cities and has a significant number of ports. Fishing is an integral part of the regions local tradition. The area has a 70km coastline which features several ‘trabocchi’, fishing machines on piles which are famous throughout Italy.

The main challenges for the Trabocchi Coast FLAG is the integration of its fisheries’ and tourism sectors. To guarantee the sustainability of the areas fishing activity, a key challenge is the diversification of the industry, establishing new sources of income and capitalising on pesca-tourism opportunities. The FLAG aims to prioritise the fishing community before the developing its tourism operations.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG’s local development strategy’s main objective is improving the economic and environmental sustainability of fisheries across the area, particularly small-scale craft enterprises. The strategy also has four specific objectives:

  • To improve the efficiency of short supply chains (improve selling sites and fishing ports and online marketing).
  • To create new areas of tourism such as emotional and pesca-tourism.
  • To improve the marketing of Trabocchi coast and it’s fishing product. For example, raising awareness in schools as to the importance of healthy food and the benefits of seafood.
  • To connect the area’s fisheries with other sectors such as agriculture, enhancing the knowledge of the areas biodiversity and its identity in other industries such as winemaking.
