FLAG Factsheet
The FLAG’s coastal territory is of high environmental value. It is comprised of numerous villages, small towns and medium-size cities and has a significant number of ports. Fishing is an integral part of the regions local tradition. The area has a 70km coastline which features several ‘trabocchi’, fishing machines on piles which are famous throughout Italy.
The main challenges for the Trabocchi Coast FLAG is the integration of its fisheries’ and tourism sectors. To guarantee the sustainability of the areas fishing activity, a key challenge is the diversification of the industry, establishing new sources of income and capitalising on pesca-tourism opportunities. The FLAG aims to prioritise the fishing community before the developing its tourism operations.
The Trabocchi Coast FLAG area has several protected natural areas including Ripari di Giobbe, Punta dell’Acquabella, Grotta delle Farfalle, San Giovanni in Venere, Lecceta di Torino di Sangro, Lecceta Punta Aderci, Fosso delle Farfalle, Lecceta litoranea di Torino di Sangro e Foce del Fiume Sangro, Punta della Penna and Marina di Vasto.
The FLAG’s local development strategy’s main objective is improving the economic and environmental sustainability of fisheries across the area, particularly small-scale craft enterprises. The strategy also has four specific objectives:
National and regional
The FLAG’s project ideas include:
The FLAG makes regular calls for projects which are published here:
The FLAG will cooperate with other FLAGs and LAGs in Chieti’s area on the development of the regions inland territory and coast. Cooperation will include the development of communication strategies on the cultural, human, environmental and ecological aspects of the Trabocchi area. These efforts will be focused online (in Italian and English) and through the development of a smartphone application.
The FLAG has an ongoing collaboration with the two other FLAGs in Abruzzo to enhance fisheries sustainability while also developing tourism. The FLAG partly shares a territory with the Trabocchi Coast LAG and shares several common development strategies which will be implemented in collaboration.
The FLAG includes nine municipalities, the University of Teramo, the national federation of fishing enterprises and several trade unions.
