FLAG Factsheet
Glückstadt is a town in the Steinburg district of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is located on the right bank of the Lower Elbe at its confluence with the Rhin river, about 45km northwest of Hamburg. The FLAG area consists solely of the municipality of Glückstadt and is part of the LAG AktivRegion of Steinburg.
The harbour of Glückstadt no longer has any important active fisheries. Due to its location on the Elbe river on the way to Hamburg, its long tradition lies in fish processing, mainly herring, which is not caught in the FLAG area.
The activities of Steinburg FLAG focus on the reputation of the area regarding the processing of herring. “Glückstädter Matjes” is a nationally well-known product (Matjes = maiden herring). The FLAG supports the marketing of this product on a regional and national level. Two companies are currently active in the processing of Matjes.
The challenges for the FLAG lie in linking the fish processing sector to the broader tourism sector and using the potential of the harbour so as to develop it into a popular tourist attraction for the town of Glückstadt.
The nature conservation area of” Rhinplate und Elbufer südlich Glückstadts“; takes up 460 hectares or roughly 20% of the FLAG’s territory.
The motto of the strategy is:” Fish & the Elbe experience”- It pursues the following four strategical aims:
The co-financing of projects is provided by the municipality of Glückstadt. The costs for the FLAG management are included in the overall management costs for the LAG Aktiv-Region Steinburg, of which the Steinburg FLAG is part.
The FLAG and LAG are closely linked with each other. This integration allows the FLAG to save on running and animation costs from the EMFF. This allows the FLAG to make the most of its budget.
Projects can be presented on an ongoing basis to the decision-making body of the FLAG which meets regularly.
The FLAG area has a long tradition of fishing and tourism. They have experience in co-operation from the last period involving marketing and interlinking with other areas with regard to tourism. There is a high interest shown by the fishermen in the development of pesca-tourism in the region, as well as exchanging and cooperating in this area of expertise. The FLAG is interested in cooperating with other German FLAGs located on the North Sea coast.
The area of the FLAG is a part of the LAG Aktiv-Region Steinburg. The FLAG decision-making body is a working group within the LAG. The FLAG has an own strategy whose contents are integrated into the overall local development strategy.
