Area

The Southern Artabro FLAG area spans approximately 340km2, has a population of 140 000 and comprises several NATURA 2000 Sites of Community Importance (SCI) such as Costa da Morte and Costa do Dexo. The area’s fishing sector has a significant impact, accounting for 41.7% of the economic activity in the region. There are nearly 440 companies linked to the sector, of which, 340 are in the city of A Coruña and conduct commercial activities, either retail or wholesale. As such, the A Coruña fish auction is highly important to the fishing economy of Galicia where, in 2015, catches generated over €80 million and represented 22% of all sales in the region. Common catches include bream, bonito and clams.

The main challenge facing the area and FLAG is the improvement of coastal areas and developing their integration into the local economy. The successful diversification of fisheries activities into tourism is also a key challenge. As is the conservation of regions natural resources and maritime cultural heritage.
