DE216
Programming period:
2014-2020

Area

The South Leipzig area FLAG is mainly characterised by wide spread former brown-coal mining areas. In many of the opencast pits, artificial lakes have developed, which form a major part of the landscape in the area south of Leipzig in the north-west of the FLAG territory. Where brown-coal mining is still active, an urban industrial structure still dominates. The long history of mining and its legacy of pollution and environmental hazards are challenges these areas must cope with. In contrast, there are large rural areas with landscapes dominated by agriculture in the southern part of the FLAG-territory.

The fishing and aquaculture sector is active in an area that covers roughly 4 117 ha, of which 357 ha are ponds. The main species of fish found in these ponds are carp and trout. The focus of the aquaculture producers is on pond restoration and the development of better direct marketing. Fishing in the area plays a rather small role, however, the new waters in the former mining areas are increasingly being used and new opportunities can be created. The economic exploitation of aquaculture and fishing is it an early stage in its development and has a lot of potential. Concepts for the further restoration and utilisation of these lakes can be developed in close coordination with all potential actors (aquaculture and fishery, tourism, environmentalists etc.).

  • Establishment of a fishing centre at the new lake of Zwenkau which combines practical processing and direct marketing with culinary offerings and fish tastings and also serves as an educational platform explaining the industry and its challenges.
  • Image campaign for the dominating fish species “Pollan” which is rather unknown by the consumers in the area.
