Area

The FLAG area is a sub region on the island of Evia which is geographically located in the epicentre of the Greek Mainland.

The main feature of the area is the proximity with the Athens Metropolitan region and the Chalkis Urban concentration both of which are less than 90 minutes’ drive away.

There are two main types of fisheries in the area:

  • Small-scale coastal fishing with a total fleet of 378 fishing boats (total annual production output approx. 550tn, covering mostly domestic demand)
  • Fish farming (23 units, total annual production output approx. 5 000tn, covering mostly foreign demand).

The implementation of a local strategy aims to enhance the potential of fish farming supporting the creation of small food processing units and restructuring the supply chain.

The main challenges in the area are: sustainable development, increasing competitiveness, job creation and improving the quality of life.

FLAG strategy

The main objectives of the FLAG strategy consist of:

  • The diversification of the income of fishermen through the development of complementary activities including investments in angling tourism, restaurants, environmental services related to fishing and educational activities concerning fishing,
  • Supporting investments in the processing of fisheries and aquaculture products that: lead to new or improved products, new or improved processes, or new or improved management and organisation systems, contribute to energy saving or reducing the impact on the environment, including waste treatment, improved safety, hygiene, health and working conditions.
  • Promoting social wellbeing and cultural heritage.

  • Small capital investments (regeneration of key areas such as squares, piers etc.).

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG has experience in preserving the coastal maritime environment.The FLAG is participating in one cooperation project “Maritime Environment-Coastal Threats and Fishery”.
