Area

The area is located on the Baltic Sea coast and is characterised by significant natural assets. There are two fishing ports: Ustka and Rowy. The area includes about 10% of all fish resources caught by the Polish fleet. There is also aquaculture production, mainly rainbow trout, as well as some traditional inland fishing activity, on the Gardno lake, which is part of a a National Park. One of the 20 fish processing plants of the area is the largest fish processing unit in Europe and the largest in the world in terms of salmon processing.

Key challenges include:

  • High levels of poverty, exclusion and unemployment, lack of stability in employment (due, in part, to a high seasonality of jobs in the tourism sector);
  • Low competitiveness and poor cooperation between businesses (between fishermen, between fisheries and tourism sectors etc.);
  • Lack of innovative culinary, cultural and accommodation products, and lack of ideas to diversify business activities, including the fisheries sector;
  • Limited touristic appeal of the area, especially in small remote villages, limited cultural and educational activity.

Protected areas:

FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy aims to respond to the challenge of limited touristic, cultural and educational activity through strengthening involvement of the local community and improving the attractiveness of the area both for local inhabitants and for tourists.

The low competitiveness and lack of stable employment will be addressed by increasing cooperation between different sectors and promoting the natural and cultural assets of the area to develop entrepreneurship.

The specific needs of the fishing sector (low incomes and low competitiveness) will be addressed by diversification both within and outside fisheries, to increase incomes while maintaining linkages with fishing activity.

Expertise & cooperation

  • The FLAG has experience in cooperation with the local community. They have been successfully operating the Slowinski Fisheries Trail for four years. This trail brings together inhabitants who would like to promote the fishing character of the area, local products, and natural resources. They also have good cooperation with NGOs in the area: we run the Local NGO Centre and organise educational activities for children.
  • The FLAG is interested in national and transnational projects involving the promotion of fishing culture to broader audiences using innovative activities and tools. They are also interested in research projects, especially ecological and environmental ones.
  • The FLAG would like to undertake cooperation in promoting fishing culture using innovative activities and tools and isinterested in both “soft” projects and investment projects which strengthen the area’s tourism offer in an innovative, out-of-the-box way.
