Area

The FLAG area is located in the North East of Schleswig Holstein on the Baltic Sea and is crossed by the River Schlei and its estuary. Both on the coast and on the river, there is strong fisheries tradition here.

The FLAG is part of the “Aktiv-Region Schlei-Ostsee” LAG.  All municipalities with harbours and/or smokehouses are eligible to be part of the FLAG strategy.

There is still some important small-scale coastal fisheries activity in the FLAG area with 37 cutters and boats operated by professional fishermen and 51 by part-time fishermen. Still, fishing activity on the river is rapidly declining. Landing in the small harbours on the banks of the Schlei is no longer profitable, but processing and marketing is still taking place. Keeping a stable level of fishing activity on the river is therefore the main concern of the FLAG.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy aims to achieve the following goals:

  • maintain jobs, especially for young people
  • develop harbour infrastructure, improving selling and processing
  • diversification and maritime tourism
  • maintenance of the historical heritage of the fishery
  • environmental and sea protection
  • awareness raising and public relations

There is a great demand for developing landing possibilities, optimising trade and marketing channels as well as creating better chances to young people within the fisheries sector.

The historical heritage of fishery plays also a major role within the Schlei-Ostsee area.

Calls for proposals

The decision-making body meets at least once a year or more often in public sessions to advise and decide on new projects.

Expertise & cooperation

The Schlei-Baltic Sea FLAG has not yet defined cooperation projects. However, new cooperation will be stimulated through the participation in network meetings in Schleswig-Holstein and exchanging experience with other FLAGs from Schleswig-Holstein within “pool projects”. The common website www.fischerleben-sh.de will support this process. (The Land of Schleswig-Holstein holds an extra budget FLAGs can use for projects that have an added value for the whole of Schleswig-Holstein, but all FLAGs from Schleswig-Holstein have to approve the support of these projects.)
