Area

The FLAG area covers the southern part of the Cilento Vallo di Diano e Alburni National Park, and is almost half the size of the former Cilento Coast FLAG (some municipalities are now included in two nearby LEADER LAGs). The natural heritage of this area has always been well preserved due to very strict management (the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site), but at the same time this has been slowing down socio-economic development. The area is characterised by small-scale fisheries with about 50 small boats and 6 landing areas (only two vessels over 12m, no big ports). Challenges here are linked to fishermen’s low competitiveness and poor linkages with the tourism sector.

Type of area:
Sea Basins:
Protected areas:

Within the area we find the “Costa infreschi e Masseta” Marine Protected Area, four Sites of Community Importance (Cala del Cefalo, Punta Telegrafo, Costa Infreschi, Bussento) and the “Cilento Vallo di Diano e Alburni” national park

FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy is geared to strengthening the competitiveness of the fishermen and supporting sustainable economic development while preserving natural, cultural and traditional resources. Therefore, close cooperation with the “Costa infreschi e Masseta” MPA is a cornerstone of the strategy. Fishermen’s profitability will be enhanced by diversification of activities and adding value to local fish products. In line with the principle of "less fish, better fish", actions will be taken to improve product quality. Other FLAG actions include improving infrastructure at landing sites, improving logistics related to fishermen’s work and enhancing the fishermen’s skills regarding environmental sustainability and diversification.

Project examples

  • The project "Marine caves and warehouses: repairs and dispensing" pursues the integrated valorisation of the hypogenous heritage of the coast. This was formerly used as shelter for animals (sheep, goats), to preserve food products from sea and land, and was also used to carry out craft activities. These caves have strong tourism potential
  • Involvement of fishermen in developing diving tourism, including controlling access to underwater hypogenous heritage

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG is interested in cooperation projects dealing with adding value to local fisheries products.

Furthermore, the FLAG is developing the cooperation idea "Mari d'Europa". This action aims to exchange practices and know-how among local producers and other European companies about the processing of fish products, in particular anchovies.
