Area

The FLAG’s area covers over 150km of the Tyrrhenian coastline, including the provinces of Cosenza and Catanzaro. The coastline is characteristically sandy and rocky and is scattered with many small mountain villages. The main tourism location in the area is the city of Diamante.

The local economy is centred around small-scale and traditional fishing activities and processing; many of the enterprises in the area are small family-run businesses. However, lately the area’s fishing sector has been in decline and a key challenge for the FLAG is a concerted effort to develop a more sustainable fisheries industry, one that can be diversified into other economic opportunities such as tourism and gastronomy.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG’s strategy is based on the development of a more economically diverse and sustainable fisheries industry. Key objectives include:

  • The development and promotion of a sustainable coastal tourism, one that is centred around gastronomic and pesca-tourism. Key to this objective is the diversification of small-scale fisheries into tourism activities.
  • To promote local products and to develop shorter supply chains.
  • To facilitate training and awareness-raising for fishers and processing employees. This will include enhancing the employment opportunities of young adults through innovative business support systems.
  • To promote the better use of the area’s natural landscape and resources. This will include the development and organisation of cultural, recreational and sporting events and festivals.
