Area

The FLAG covers the Pazardzhik rural area but excludes the city of Pazardzhik. The landscape is mostly flat with some mountainous landscapes to the south. Running through the territory is the Maritsa River. Along the Maritsa are several micro dams and six aquaculture companies which are small enterprises using intensive floating cage techniques. The region lacks both a specialised aquaculture market and processing sector, though one processing business is being development.

In addition to the aquaculture production, recreational fishing is a prominent activity on the banks of the Maritsa river. Some sports fishing sites are built and managed on the territory in addition to aquaculture production.

Most of the FLAG’s territory sits within protected areas under the NATURA 2000 Network including three areas listed under the Habitats Directive and three listed under the Birds Directive.

FLAG strategy

The main objective of the local development strategy is to increase the economic and social prosperity of the area and improve the quality of life in the fishery sector. Specific objectives include:

  • Increasing the competitiveness of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and promoting innovative approaches to ensuring growth and the creation of jobs.
  • Maintaining and creating jobs through the diversification of fisheries activities and social restructuring.
  • Increasing the attractiveness of the area as a place to live through improving the environment and promoting cultural heritage and tourism and events.

Project examples

Potential projects will be focused on the following themes:

  • Diversification aquaculture activities.
  • Adding value to local aquaculture products.
  • Promoting the local consumption of locally produced fish and fishery products.

Calls for proposals

The FLAG will open calls for project proposals on an annual basis, potential beneficiaries will be welcome to submit project proposals with set deadlines annually. The deadline for submitting project proposals will be 90 days from the date of the call.

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG team will be exchanging know-how with other Bulgarian FLAGs and will participate in the activities carried out by the Bulgarian NFN and FARNET. The FLAG intends to implement some national and international co-operation projects and activities with other FLAGs with the aim of:

  • Developing the fisheries area.
  • Capacity building for beneficiaries implementing projects in the area.

Budget envisaged for cooperation: Cooperation projects will be covered by the FLAG’s running costs.
