Area

The area has an excellent climate, is rich in natural resources and landscapes, and has a rare flora and fauna. The fisheries sector in the area is considered particularly important because it creates jobs and offers healthy products to the people. The sub-sectors of the fisheries sector in the area are coastal fishing, aquaculture and processing.

The level of educational attainment in the area is low compared to the national average and as a result, finding opportunities for people can be difficult. Another challenge that affects the FLAG is maintaining a balanced development in harmony with the environment in light of a growing tourism sector.

FLAG strategy

The main objective of the FLAG strategy is the promotion of employment, entrepreneurship and social cohesion, as well as improving the quality of life of the residents in order to create attractive fisheries areas with the participation of the local community.

The main priority of the strategy is to improve competitiveness of the fisheries areas through diversification of the local economy and the creation of public, social, environmental and cultural assets and infrastructure.

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG has participated in many cooperation projects including “Wanderings in Favoured Areas of Cyprus " and “Local Products for Local Development", a transnational project involving Cyprus, Sweden, Ireland, Austria and Finland.
