Area

The FLAG’s territory encompasses the coastline between Marina di Pisa and Marina di Carrara. Inland, the territory includes the regions of Lunigiana and Garfagnana which are predominantly mountainous and include Tuscany’s main aquaculture activities. The region is heavily forested and has several rivers and is a popular fly-fishing location. As such, sports fishing tourism is growing in the area.

Marina di Pisa was built during the economic boom of the late 1800s, as a seaside resort. It was further developed in the 1930s. Marina di Carrara, also a holiday resort, has a surface area of 4.97km² and a growing population of about 15 000 inhabitants. Challenges for the area include a lack of linkages between the regions coastal fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Other challenges include the sustainable development of tourism.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG’s local development strategy is aimed at developing and safeguarding of the marine resources through the cultural growth of the area’s operators, increasing the economy of the fisheries sector and forming closer links and synergies with the regions aquaculture industry. Through the development of an increased interaction between the two sectors, the FLAG aims to optimise the area’s shared resources. More specific objectives include:

  • Creating synergies between the various sectors of the supply chain, namely fishing, aquaculture, processing, distribution and marketing.
  • Developing educational and training initiatives for environmental, fisheries and food.
  • Develop a national and international promotion plan for Lunigiana and Garfagnana resorts, with the involvement of fishing tourism and the tourism sector. Particular attention at the local level will promote the school tourism sector.
