The Noroeste de Cádiz FLAG area consists of five municipalities: Trebujena, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Rota, Chipiona and Puerto de Santa María. The regions of Trebujena and Puerto de Santa María stand out in the aquaculture sector, where a public research centre for fisheries and aquaculture supports private companies producing both fish and microalgae. Fishing activities (trawling, seining, shell-fishing) are widespread throughout the area where there are several fishing ports and catches are sold at fish auctions daily. In addition to the fishing and aquaculture activities, the area has significant agriculture and tourism sectors.
Challenges for the FLAG area include the low visibility of its fisheries industry, a lack of marketing opportunities for local products and a lack of innovation in the sector. Promoting social inclusion and improving the quality of life of the area’s fisheries communities is also a key challenge for the FLAG and region.
75km2 of the FLAG’s territory is protected under the Natura 2000 Network.
The FLAG strategy aims to improve and development its fisheries at social, economic and environmental levels. To achieve these aims, the FLAG strategy includes the following key objectives:
Strengthening the identity, cultural heritage and traditions of the region as a means of creating added value.
Projects examples and ideas for the FLAG include the following:
The enhancement of the area’s environmental heritage.
Regarding the previous programming period, the Noroeste de Cádiz FLAG has experience in cooperation projects related to pesca-tourism, processing, innovation and adding value to fisheries products. Concerning this period, the FLAG is eager to cooperate to support marine tourism projects, marketing platforms for fisheries products and co-management systems for fisheries resources.
FLAG members include the town halls of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, El Puerto de Santa María, Rota, Trebujena and Chipiona, the fishing organisation (‘cofradías’) of Sanlúcar, a women association and several fisheries enterprises.
