Area

The area is located in the centre Aegean Sea and covers the islands of Limnos and Aghios Efstratios, as well as few smaller, uninhabited islets. Limnos is the eighth largest Greek island and, for many centuries, was the landmark of the most important marine trails where the Mediterranean and the Black Sea met.

The whole regional unit has a long fishing tradition and along with agriculture and tourism it remains the main source of income here.

The main challenges here are the difficulties involved with the introduction of sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods, as well as an ageing population and a high rate of unemployment.
