FLAG Factsheet
The FLAG covers an area of 162 km 2, and includes 20 municipalities in the provinces of Naples and Salerno (from Castellammare di Stabia to Vietri sul Mare). The area is geographically identified as the Sorrento Peninsula and Amalfi Coast with the addition of the adjacent Island of Capri and is highly popular for tourism. During Axis 4, the area was covered by the Punta Campanella – Parco dei Monti Lattari FLAG, with the exception of the Castellammare di Stabia municipality and Capri island.
The fisheries sector here is facing severe challenges in terms of diminishing fish resources and falling competitiveness. Supporting the socio-economic development of the small-scale fisheries sector and helping it to diversify into the strong potential of the local tourism economy, is therefore a key objective for the FLAG.
The area has six sites of Community Importance (SCI) and four Special Protection Areas (SPAs) areas, and three natural parks (Monti Lattari, Punta Campanella and Valle delle Ferriere).
The FLAG’s strategy focuses on the competitive, integrated and sustainable development of the area based on its local identity and making use of its natural and cultural resources. It aims to create a favourable environment for the development of viable entrepreneurial initiatives, to strengthen interactions between fisheries, tourism, crafts and agriculture sectors, and to facilitate knowledge transfer between these sectors. As fishing is still considered as a purely economic activity in the area, the FLAG will promote an innovative approach and support developing links with cultural and environmental services.
The following actions are planned:
National and regional
The FLAG is interested in cooperation projects dealing with the development of sustainable tourism, direct sales of local fisheries products, joint marketing of local products from land and sea, and building links between producers and local catering/restaurants.
Furthermore, the FLAG is developing the following cooperation ideas:
The FLAG shares certain board members with the local Terra Protetta LEADER LAG and their territories overlap. The two groups signed a partnership agreement and implement both strategies in close cooperation.
FLAG members include fisheries cooperatives and associations, trade associations, 20 municipalities, the LEADER LAG Terra Protetta, Monti Lattari regional park and the marine protected area of Punta Campanella.
