Area

Historically linked with the tobacco trade commerce as well as fish processing and retail, Kavala city is a beautiful amphitheatrical city open to Aegean Sea. The most important features of the area are the fisheries sector which accounts for 1.55% of total employment in the area including small-scale and large-scale fishing.

The main challenges in this area include high unemployment and the limited development of tourism. It is hoped to solve these challenges by creating a unique local identity linked with the sea and the fisheries sector.

FLAG strategy

The main thematic direction of the FLAG’s strategy is to support local entrepreneurship and promote local identity in so far as it is connected with the sea and the fisheries sector. Additionally, it aims to improve the competitiveness of fisheries products, as well as the quality of life in the fisheries area.

The main aim is to address the challenges through promoting financial restructuring, employment and sustainable development with a focus on the sea and fisheries activities as well as blue growth sectors.

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG will take part in a transnational project on the development of aquaculture production, including the involvement of private investment, which should start later this year.

The FLAG members include four local municipalities and their regional association, two agricultural co-operatives, the local section of the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Kavala Association of Engineers, the Kavala Ski and Mountaineering Club and a local hunting club.

The decision-making board of the FLAG is composed of seven bodies: Kavala municipality, Εast Macedonia and Thrace Prefecture, the Kavala Port Organisation, the Kavala Chamber of Commerce, the Macedonia Fisheries Cooperative Organisation, the Kavala Nautical Club and the Geo-technical Chamber.
