Region:
Code:
PL213
Programming period:
2014-2020

Area

The area is situated in the north-eastern part of Pomerania, in the Kaszuby Lake district. There are over 100 lakes and several rivers, the total surface of waters is over 6,000 hectares (nearly 5% of the FLAG area). Most of the lakes are owned by the state, others are rented by small family businesses which carry out extensive fish production. One of the challenges is the falling incomes of the fish farms as although there is good demand for fresh fish from the lake, prices are low. Cormorants cause significant losses. Many people in fishing families, particularly women, are looking for new sources of income, and are increasingly looking towards the tourism sector. The fishing sector is poorly integrated in the fishing community.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG intends to improve the integration of the fisheries sector into the local community, strengthen its identity and promote the Kaszuby fisheries tradition (including traditional fishing equipment, skills, fish cooking recipes etc.).

It will seek to support business development both within the fisheries supply chain and in other sectors. It will also carry out training and awareness raising about water quality and the natural assets of the area, including the impact of cormorants on the incomes of fish farms. Support is also envisaged to strengthen civic dialogue and improve participation of the fisheries communities in local governance.

Expertise & cooperation

  • The FLAG has experience in implementing cooperation projects, in particular the interterritorial project on the training of future chefs in cooking fish which was awarded in the FARNET conference in 2015 and which resulted in a joint project with a Bulgarian FLAG and a cookery book in three languages.
  • The FLAG is interested in improving the operations of the FLAG through dialogue and participation, developing human and social capital through cooperation projects and also involving representatives of the fisheries sector.
  • The FLAG already envisages several cooperation projects for the current period including the continuation of the interterritorial project “Northern Fisheries Trail, involving nine Polish FLAGs. Furthermore, it is also hoped to continue the cooperation project with the North Kaszuby FLAG and the Bulgarian FLAG Shabla-Kavarna-Balchik on training of gastronomy school students.
