Area

The Itria Valley F/LAG occupies an area between the three main cities of the Apulia Region: Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. It is also called the Trulli’s Valley due to the presence of the traditional Apulian stone buildings. The shore is mostly rocky with small sandy bays, and it is characterised by Mediterranean scrub (“la macchia mediterranea”).

The local economy is mostly based on agriculture, tourism, services and fisheries with the Fasano municipality having a small fishing and recreational port. Fisheries is an important for local incomes, in spite of the lack of a local market or local processing plants.

Despite this, the fishing sector is suffering a crisis, and the number of enterprises is rapidly decreasing. Reasons for this decline include the need to maintain environmental sustainability, the over exploitation of fish stocks and a general lack of business culture
