Area

The FLAG area is situated in the south of the Istrian peninsula. All local self-government units, apart from the Svetvinčenat municipality, are coastal. The area is very rich in historical and cultural heritage which to a large extent is linked with the sea and fisheries. A significant part of the area is under the protection of Natura 2000.

The main economic activity of the FLAG area is tourism. In the region, as well as in the entire Istrian county, fishing is a traditional economic activity. With a total of 287 registered fishing boats, the FLAG area accounts for 25.29% of the total number of fishing vessels of the Istrian County and 3.66% of the number of registered vessels in Croatia. Challenges for the FLAG include the following:

  • Insufficient recognition of local fisheries products.
  • Low consumption of fisheries products per capita.
  • Insufficient diversification into non-fishing activities.
  • Pollution of water and beaches mainly due to tourism.
