Area

The FLAG area stretches along the coastal strip overlooking the Gulf of Naples, and features strong views of the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida throughout. Close to Naples, there is a significant amount of interaction between urban and coastal areas. The fisheries sector is one of the cornerstones of the local economy, especially small-scale coastal fishing, which prevails throughout the territory.

Challenges here include low profit margins for fishermen, a need for diversification, and the need to develop economic activities while protecting the environment.

FLAG strategy

The strategy aims to reactivate, strengthen and consolidate the territorial economic activities related to the exploitation of marine and coastal resources by promoting entrepreneurial development and creating new employment opportunities, and also by improving the living conditions of the households linked to these activities.

Main actions include:

  • The development and diversification of local fisheries businesses
  • Supporting sustainable tourism linked to fisheries, while maintaining the protection and promotion of local, cultural and natural heritage
  • Improving working conditions, health, hygiene and safety on board.
  • Developing port facilities for primary processing, short term storage and direct sales

Project examples

  • Creating a point for direct sales at the “Circolo Nautico del Comune di Torre del Greco” landing site, which will provide minimum equipment (ice machine, counter, etc.) and other equipment that can meet health and safety standards.
  • Linking the City Sightseeing business model with tourism spots located along the coastal strip with the aim of integrating tourism in the area.
  • Supporting investment in small coastal fishing activities, with reference to innovative catching methods, technical improvements for boats (hull, propulsion systems, etc.), improving safety and hygiene on board.

Calls for proposals

The following calls will be published:

  • two calls for investment plans for business development and diversification;
  • a thematic call for the establishment of infrastructure for direct fish sales and for fish processing;
  • two calls for training;
  • three annual calls for integrated tourism actions;
  • two annual calls for cooperation actions.

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG is new and is interested in cooperation projects related to the marketing of local products and in particular on the twinning of markets.
