FLAG Factsheet
The FLAG is situated in the southern and central part of the Romanian Plain. The landscape is flat, crossed by many small rivers. To the north are the Argeş and Dâmboviţa Rivers. To the south, the area covers 55km of the Danube River which also marks the Bulgarian border. Agriculture is the main occupation in the region – both industrial and small-scale which predominantly serve markets in Bucharest. The area has several aquaculture fisheries which also provide significant levels of employment locally.
Challenges for the FLAG area include an aging population. The population of inhabitants over the age of 60 is approximately 38% higher than those under the age of 20. This is largely due to high out-migration, a phenomenon typical of many rural areas in Romania.
