Area

The FLAG territory comprises the habitable area of the northernmost part of the Făgăraș Mountains, in the county of Brasov. The area is situated in the geographical centre of Romania and the Olt river runs through the FLAG’s territory, one of the country’s most important rivers. The region also comprises a rich network of smaller mountain rivers, artificial lakes and a large reservoir. Many trout fisheries and aquaculture units have been developed across these bodies of water.

Historically, Făgăraș was an industrial area, defined by the Nitramonia chemical plant, once the largest employer in the region with over 11 000 employees. Now the local economy is complex and includes a developing food and beverage industry, the manufacture of chemicals, rubber and plastic products, textiles, construction and transport services.

Challenge for the FLAG area include an aging population and a social infrastructure which lacks adequate funding and requires modernisation. Specific challenges facing the fisheries sector include a lack of knowledge due to skills not being transferred between generations.
