Area

El Hierro is the smallest and most westerly island of the Canary archipelago. The FLAG area consists of the municipalities of La Frontera, El Pinar and Valverde, covers an area of approximately 270km2, and has a population of 10 000. The Service sector accounts for almost 80% of the island economic activity. Unlike the rest of the other Canary Islands, tourism does not stand out as the main sector. Instead, public administration and the health sector are the islands primary industry.

The islands fisheries sector is composed of around 30 small-scale vessels. In recent years the industry has been in decline which is a challenge to both the FLAG and area. Additionally, the age of fisheries workers is increasing. Many active fishermen are over the age of 50 and attracting younger inhabitants to the industry is difficult and a key challenge to the FLAG.
