FLAG Factsheet
The Eastern Asturias FLAG area consists of four municipalities: Caravia, Ribadesella, Llanes and Ribadedeva. Although located on the periphery of Asturias region, the area’s location does not present any infrastructural or service insufficiencies. The area has a strong tourism sector, which represents nearly 80% of its economic activity.
With a coastline of only 110 km, the local fishing the fleet is relatively small, comprising of just 30 inshore fishing vessels with a total crew of roughly 80 fishermen. Accounting for only 4% of the area’s economy, linking fisheries with the area’s hospitably industry is an ongoing challenge for the FLAG. Maintaining short local seafood supply chains is an important strategic objective in the development of the area’s tourism sector, which is largely based on its local gastronomy.
The FLAG has several protected areas under the conservation of the Birds Directive, including Ria of Ribadesella and Ria of Tinamayor. Similarly, the FLAG has multiple protected areas under the conservation of the Habitats Directive, including the Cabras-Bedón, Purón, Caceres-Deva and Sella rivers, the Vega beach and the Sueve mountain range.
The Eastern Asturias FLAG’s strategy is addressed to everyone involved in the area’s fisheries sector, either on regular basis or occasionally depending on the fishing season. This FLAG also supports actions which increase the perception and awareness of the area’s fishing sector, add value to local fisheries products and improve the areas natural environments and water quality.
The FLAG’s main strategic objectives include the following:
Regional
While there is a coordinated management of CLLD under both the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), this does not imply multi-funding and there is a separate strategy for each of the programmes.
