Area

The FLAG area stretches between two gulfs on the Macedonian coast. Its main advantage is its proximity to the big market town of Thessaloniki. The type of fisheries found here ranges from small to medium scale. The area has one fishery harbour with a fish auction, three fishery shelters, and significant processing infrastructure.

The main species caught here include red mullet, bream, sardines, anchovy and cod.

Some of the main challenges facing the area include the limited competitiveness of the seafood industry, a lack of business and cooperation culture, insufficient links between local production and alternative tourism activities as well as the effect of the wider Greek financial crisis.

There are five protected areas covering 65 216 acres of the intervention area: Delta Axiou-Loudia-Aliakmona, Rentina, the Aggelohori lagoon, part of the Volvi-Koronia lagoon and the Rentina Epanomi lagoon.
