Area

The Delitzscher region is situated in the north of Saxony, in western “Nordsachsen” to the north of the city of Leipzig. 72% of the area is used for agricultural purposes and 1,933 ha is covered in water. As a result of brown coal mining there are numerous newly formed lakes, that have become more and more popular for recreation and sport activities.

The local community has found it challenging to make these lakes suitable for tourism and fishing due to the strict requirements of nature conservation legislation. Fisheries does not have a long tradition in this area, therefore it still must be fully established and be able to aggregate added value by marketing and selling the new fish along the supply chain.

FLAG strategy

Considering the evolving landscape here, the FLAG aims to establish non-commercial and commercial fishery activities as well as value chains in the area. This shall be done in cooperation with the neighbouring Leipziger Südraum FLAG which has similar conditions. The planned common activities involve identifying the necessary framework conditions for fishery activities in post-mining lakes, as well as bringing regional fisheries products to market and exchanging experiences with other areas with a similar situation.

In the long run, it is expected that the cooperation between the fish farmers, the processing sector and local gastronomy will produce added value for the area and the fisheries sector that will be created.
