Area

The FLAG area is situated in Puglia (Italy’s ‘boot heel’) and is known for white painted towns, centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometres of Mediterranean coastline, the longest in the country. Daunia is an urban and industrialised area in the north of the region.

The fishing fleets based in Manfredonia land a substantial amount of the area’s fish (62%). The vessels of Barletta are also significant which the town’s port being important for both fisheries and commercial shipping. Barletta is home of the countries last operational ‘trabucco’, a traditional wooden fishing machine. The Barletta ‘trabucco’ has become a cultural asset and is currently under restoration.

The main challenges in the area, are related to taxation, bureaucracy, inflated diesel prices and increasing unemployment. New Mediterranean regulations on cuttlefish and razor clams, two of the area’s main fisheries products, also present a substantial challenge to the FLAG area.

The FLAG’s local development strategy is focused on increasing the attractiveness of the area while also protecting and improving the quality of life of the local population. Key objectives include:

Enhancing the linkages between stakeholders and developing a mutual focus on socio-cultural and environmental issues.
Explore new and innovative systems for the enhancement of coastal territorial developments.
Diversifying fisheries activities into other sectors, namely tourism.
Promoting innovation and investments into the fisheries product development process.

The Daunofantino FLAG is multi-funded and is therefore also a LEADER LAG. There is a common local development strategy funded by bot the EAFRD and EMFF. The FLAG and LAG share a legal structure, a board and cooperate on a formal basis.
