Area

Cornouaille, on the western part of Brittany, has a 330km coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.  The FLAG area counts 130 000 jobs and its key industries include food processing, tourism and commercial fisheries. 20% of the fish landed in French ports is landed in Cornouaille. The fishing industry (from shipbuilding to fish and shellfish trade) is of key importance to the area, with a great diversity of fisheries-related occupations and of species landed.

As a key component of the local economy, maintaining the local fisheries activities is an important challenge, be it through ensuring young people enter the sector or that existing boats and business are transferred upon retirement of older fishermen and shellfish farmers, Other important challenges include the social acceptability of these activities – especially aquaculture – and the creation of value-added along the fisheries value chain within the territory.

The Cornouaille FLAG is in contact with other French FLAGs (mainly in the Bay of Biscay) and considers the FARNET meetings as a good opportunity to liaise with French and European FLAGs and identify potential cooperation channels (especially with Portugal, Spain – Galicia -, Ireland, etc).
