FLAG Factsheet
--ARCHIVED as of 31 January 2020--
Pembrokeshire has a long tradition of fishing, both sea and freshwater. Tenby was the prime fishing port of the area for many centuries. More recently Milford Haven has developed and taken more of a predominant role in the area’s fishing industry; this was also due in large to Tenby becoming more of a holiday resort. Today, Pembrokeshire is a rural area primarily dependent upon agriculture and the tourism and energy industries.
While fishing remains important, it is much less so now than it was in the past. Pembrokeshire no longer has a high seas fishing fleet and most of the areas fisheries industry comprises vessels under 10 metre, which principally fish within a six-mile limit. The main fish processing in the area concerns shellfish, predominantly crab and lobster. There has been an increase in local shell-fishermen adding value to their own catch, as well as businesses processing local catches. Fish processing mainly comprises filleting and portioning to add value and prepare the products for the retail and hospitality trade.
The challenges faced by the Cleddau to Coast FLAG are to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of the Pembrokeshire fishing industry by adding value, diversification and collaborative working arrangements, and to ensure the voice and welfare of fishing communities are understood and promoted.
The FLAG has several protected areas including the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) - http://www.pembrokeshiremarinesac.org.uk/.
The FLAG’s strategy includes the following aims and objectives:
The FLAG receives funding from the National Lottery funded Coastal Communities Fund (CFF) which encourages the economic development of UK coastal communities.
Projects examples and ideas for the Cleddau to Coast FLAG will be focused on the following wider issues:
The FLAG makes calls for projects on a regular basis which are published locally.
The FLAG has thematic experience in fishing associations, conservation interests, LEADER and local authorities and local businesses. The FLAG is interested in playing a major role in improving relations between various interest groups in the fisheries industry by providing them with a shared vision and encouraging them to take part in collaborative ventures with mutual benefits.
The FLAG ensures that there are strong links between the Cleddau to Coast FLAG and the Pembrokeshire Local Action Group Arwain Sir Benfro and its Lead Body, PLANED. Both Arwain Sir Benfro and PLANED are represented on the FLAG, and Pembrokeshire County Council is a member of Arwain Sir Benfro.
