Area

The FLAG area has remained unchanged compared to Axis 4, and includes four municipalities (Chioggia, Rosolina, Porto Viro and Porto Tolle) in the provinces of Venice and Rovigo. It has a coastline of about 70 km, with the presence of 380 vessels, of which 212 are in Chioggia, ranging between 4 and 30 meters.

The challenges that this FLAG seeks to address relate to the exploitation of local fish production, the establishment of a maritime management tool, and the protection of the environment.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy continues to support fisheries competitiveness, to protect the environment and to build capacity at the local level. FLAG actions include:

  • Supporting employment recovery in fishery companies;
  • Boosting employment in aquaculture activities;
  • Supporting start-ups;
  • Supporting fishermen in the practical implementation of the regulation on discards at sea (Reg. 1380/2013);
  • Supporting advanced management of environmental services in port areas;
  • Supporting integrated planning of the maritime space to protect the interest of the local fish economy while protecting the environment (e.g. restoring production areas, improving accessibility to lagoon areas, sustaining the conservation of biodiversity for the conservation of habitats, species habitats and species of the Natura 2000 network).

Project examples

  • Processing, marketing and valorisation of the fish products
  • Innovative production techniques in mariculture and development of seed management systems in the lagoon area
  • Supporting diversification of fishing businesses
  • Encouraging the development of new businesses in the fisheries sector, or integration of existing ones, particularly in the areas of marketing, promotion and the supply chain of local fish products
  • Restoring the environmental quality of some lagoon areas
  • Supporting for the management of discards under Reg. (EU) 1380/2013 and the implementation of ecosystem services
  • Promoting participatory governance measures for Integrated Space Management within 12 nautical miles
  • Supporting services for fisheries communities in port areas
  • Supporting services for computerization, digitization and traceability of products in fish markets
  • Development of cultural and museum spaces for the promotion of local fisheries and aquaculture heritage
  • Enhancing cultural exchange initiatives with other national and European territories.

Expertise & cooperation

During the 2007-2013 programming period, the FLAG developed a cooperation project together with other Adriatic FLAGs (GAC Veneziano, GAC Distretto Mare Adriatico, GAC marinerie di Romagna and GAC Friuli Venezia Giulia) dealing with discards at sea and accompanying actions in the Upper Adriatic Region (Rigetti in mare e azioni di accompagnamento nell’area del Distretto Alto Adriatico).

The FLAG intends to develop future interterritorial, Adriatic and transnational cooperation projects on the following topics:

  • Strengthening the role of fishermen in the integrated coastal zone management and resources management;
  • Strengthen ecosystem resilience through the development and promotion of ecosystem services in the fisheries and aquaculture sector;
  • Integration of pesca-tourism and itti-tourism into other tourism promotion actions in the Adriatic
  • Study of the effects of environmental protection measures (e.g. Sites of Community Importance designation) on the fisheries sector
