Area

The Cádiz Estrecho FLAG area spans approximately 710km2, has a population of 70 000, and comprises natural marshland and the estuaries of the Sancti Petri channel. The area’s main fisheries activities are on the coastal stretch between the Bays of Cádiz and Algeciras, which are served by the fishing ports of Algeciras and Sancti Petri, which is situated in Chiclana. Catches in the area include octopus, squid, bass, bream, mackerel and sardines.

From a historical point of view, the economy of the area has been closely linked to fishing and its associated activities. However, in recent years the industry has been in decline which is a challenge to the FLAG area. Related challenges include the diversification of fisheries activities into other sectors, illegal fishing and poaching, and the protection of the area’s natural environment.

Project examples

Projects examples and ideas for the FLAG include the following:

  • Devise new branding with a view to creating new marketing systems aimed at the end consumer.
  • Increase the new farmed species of shellfish in aquaculture.
  • Increase the value of the cultural heritage to raise awareness of the different tuna fishing methods i.e. the mobile tuna trap (‘‘almadraba de tiro’) and the static tuna trap (‘almadraba de buche’).
  • Increase the value of products currently of low commercial value by introducing new styles of cuisine and thus shorten supply chains.

Creation, implementation and recuperation of trap-net sites.

Calls for proposals

Calls for projects are made annually and are published on the FLAG website:
