FLAG Factsheet
The FLAG is situated in the Burgas region and covers part of the Burgas Bay and its adjacent inland zones. The FLAG territory also includes the municipality of Kameno, which is a rural area. In total, there are 27 water basins on the FLAG territory. The fisheries industry is represented by six aquaculture farms and eight processing companies. There are approximately 1100 licenses issues for commercial fishing, which is a traditional activity in the region.
The FLAG's challenges include an ageing population, net out-migration, low incomes in fisheries communities, a lack of infrastructure, out-of-date technologies, a lack of investment, and the need for diversification into other sectors, such as tourism.
There are three Natura 2000 sites in the FLAG territory covering a total area of 63.4km2. They are Otmanli, Mandra - Poda, and Chengene Skele Bay.
The FLAG’s local development strategy is focused on promoting and developing the quality of life of the area’s local communities. Key objectives include:
The FLAG will prepare regular calls for projects, which will have a fixed deadline of 90 days. More information can be found on the FLAG website - http://flag-burgas.org.
The FLAG shares its territory with the Kameno-Burgas LEADER LAG. However, the two groups do not share a legal structure and implement CLLD independently. The FLAG cooperates informally with both the Kameno-Burgas LAG and the nearby Pomorie LAG.
FLAG members include representatives from the municipalities of Burgas and Kameno, four fisherman’s organisations, several fishermen, two local aquaculture farms, an aquaculture processing company, and several local community activists.
