Area

The FLAG area covers the island of Brač and its surrounding waters. Brač is an island in the Adriatic Sea, Croatia. With an area of 396km2, it the largest island in Dalmatia and the third largest in the Adriatic.  The island is separated from the mainland by the Brač Channel, which is up to 13km wide. The island's tallest peak St. Vid, stands at 780m, making it the highest island point in the Adriatic. The area has an estimated population of 14 000 living in numerous settlements, ranging from the main town Supetar, with more than 3 300 inhabitants, to Murvica, which has less than 30 permanent residents.

The economy in Brač is based predominantly on tourism, but fishing and agriculture (mainly grapes and olives) are also important. In the area, there are 218 registered fishing boats but the currently infrastructure is insufficient for future development of the island’s fisheries. Challenges for the region include the low competitiveness of the local fishing fleet, insufficient marketing and a lack of linkages with other sectors (gastronomy and pesca-tourism). Other challenges include maintaining and improving the sustainability of the area and the quality of life of local communities.

Expertise & cooperation

As the FLAG was only established in the 2014-2020 programming period, it has limited experience in cooperation. The FLAG is, however, interested in transnational cooperation projects related to the development of new markets for fisheries products, alternative tourism and the exploitation of its Natura areas and cultural resources. It is also interested in raising public awareness on issues related to environmental protection.
