Area

The FLAG area is a coastal region situated near the city of Rostock in the north German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and has a 62km coastline. In the west, the Wustrow peninsula rises into the Baltic Sea and surrounds the Salzhaff with the mainland. The Warnow river flows through the region and into the Baltic Sea at Rostock.

The area is characterised by low population density, with rural settlement structures throughout the region. The fishing industry is predominantly characterised by small-scale inland fisheries and recently the area has seen a rise in water tourism which has led to the development of several water sports facilities.

A key challenge for the FLAG area is its declining population due to an outward net-migration. Other challenges include environmental concerns connected to a rise in tourism. The sustainable development and diversification of fisheries activities into the tourism sector are a key priority for the FLAG, however, they recognise the need to do this harmoniously with conservation efforts.

FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy, in general, seeks to improve the quality of life of fishers in the area by developing and expanding economic opportunity and supporting diversification of fisheries activities. Horizontally, the strategy also seeks to protect the area’s natural environment. More specific objectives include:

Supporting the diversification fishermen’s employment activities.
Strengthening the competitiveness of the area’s fisheries and tourism sectors.
Safeguarding the survival of rural communities and their way of life. Promoting social inclusion and the protection of cultural heritage.
Stimulating networking, social involvement and coexistence.

Calls for proposals

The FLAG issues no specific calls for projects and therefore has no deadlines. Projects can be submitted on an ad-hoc basis.

Expertise & cooperation

The FLAG has experience in the diversification of fisheries activities and employment skills of fishermen. The FLAG is willing to share this experience and would like to cooperate with neighbouring CLLD groups.

Links with LEADER or other CLLD groups

The FLAG shares its territory and some board members with a local LEADER LAG. The two entities coordinate their work on an informal basis.
